We've almost made it to May....Spring planting is in full force. My cool weather crops are going in the ground, while my summer heat lovers get the whole greenhouse to themselves.
One of this years goals is bountiful sunflowers so they are well on their way. We will have branching and the single stem procuts, there are 300 sunflowers planted so far! Also planted are snapdragons, amazon neon, dianthus, statice, strawflowers, eucalyptus, lisianthus, sweet william, stock and 2 dz dahlias so far...Along with the many perennials that come up every year. I do protect some of the newly planted seedlings when the temps dip near freezing. Mostly because I am nervous, the concept of cool weather crops is still new to me. These varieties are more tolerant of the cooler temps and even thrive in them. I would never plant o zinnias, celosia or tomatoes, to name a few this early in the season as they can not tolerate the cold.
April is a busy time in the gardens, between seed starting, transplanting, weed control and planting in the gardens. All of which I did today, on this rainy day. Whenever I can I plant before a rain, the transplants acclimate better and it saves me time with not having to water.
I have been enjoying many varieties of daffodils and spring bulbs for a while now. As soon as we get our next round of warmth we will have a new succession of blooms. I'm very excited to see them arrive...By June we will be in full swing, with blooms galore.
We have several projects happening on the farm now. We are having a new driveway put in, the old one probably 40 years old couldn't be saved in spots. What better time to put in water to my shop and gardens , as well as electric to the She Shed than when the driveway is torn up.... RIGHT? So we will have a bit of a mess for awhile, but the good news it has already begun, so we will get to enjoy the benefits all season! :)
